2014 Chevrolet Reaper Custom Truck

2014 Chevrolet Reaper Custom Truck – It was only a matter of time before someone decided to give the Ford Raptor a run for its money, in this case through well-known tuner Ken Lingenfelter. The company announced its new Chevrolet Silverado-based Reaper project last Friday at the National Automotive Dealers Association.

The 2014 Reaper is the result of a conversion kit that takes an average Silverado — already a good truck — and puts it on steroids, so to speak. The Reaper sports a Lingenfelter supercharged V8 under the hood that makes a total of 550 hp. That’s 139 ponies more than the Raptor, which has 411 hp. Lingenfelter worked with Southern Comfort Automotive on the project.

The Reaper is armed with 20-inch beadlock wheels, a Fox Racing suspension system, a high-clearance bumper, a reinforced skid plate, and an integrated reflector system that should help it tackle any terrain at highway-caliber speeds.

The spirit of the Silverado is evident, but you’ll notice a redesigned front fascia and some graphics splashed around the rear that bear an uncanny resemblance to the Raptor’s bed design.

The expected price for the Chevrolet Reaper is estimated between $50,000 and $60,000. That’s a few bills more than the Raptor, which starts at $46,240, but remember there’s a considerable increase in power.

The Reaper website confirms that conversion kits for the beat-up Chevy will be sold at select Chevrolet dealers nationwide. We hope to get some more details on specs and interior and exterior images closer to the Chicago Auto Show. When you think of the biggest rivalries, you might think of Red Sox-Yankees or Packers-Vikings (or Patriots and everyone else). but that’s small potatoes compared to the gap between Ford and Chevy owners. Each owner is fiercely loyal to their brand and really likes to talk trash about the other guys product.

In 2014, when this Chevy Reaper was built, the Ford Raptor was temporarily out of production, so Chevy had an opening to modify the Ford, and they took it. Enter the then-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Reaper. Although you can get one on the dealer floor in 2017, in 2014 the Reaper was a modified Silverado 1500 that was actually a joint venture between GM, Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, and custom builder Southern Comfort, or SCA Performance.

Lingenfelter has long been a name known for its big power, and thanks to them the Reaper now has a Magnuson supercharger to pack the Silverado a 6.2-liter V8 and raise the output to 550 horses. Founded by John Lingenfelter and now run by his son Ken, Lingenfelter Performance Engineering has been building fast vehicles for over 43 years and apparently has everything you need to get every pony out of your engine. GM contacting them was a no-brainer as the two companies have a long history of working together.

SCA Performance of Trussville, AL has been building off-road worthy trucks since 1979 and it doesn’t stop at Chevy. They will build just about anything you could want, including Dodge trucks, Jeeps, and even Fords. When you go to their website, you see a guy and his dogs getting out of a pickup truck and getting ready to hunt. These guys know what it takes to get around the hills south of Mason-Dixon in style and comfort, but when it came to suspension, the owner called on the off-road race winners Baja Kits By Brenthel.

The truck was dropped off at Baja Kits in Anaheim, CA. where he underwent most of the improvements. The guys took the truck apart and then got to work on the suspension. Baja Kits added their 4WD Long Travel Race Kit, which included their fabricated 4WD uprights. King is Brenthel’s and thus Baja Kits, a regular shock of choice, so a pair of King Shocks, a 3.0 Coil-Over and a 3.0 Bypass are used, along with a King Air Bump to smoothly finish off that big success

Baja Kits trick Rear Cantilever Shock System controls Currie Enterprises floating rear. It uses a pair of King 3.0 triple Bypass shocks and King Air Bumps, along with Deaver Springs leaf packs. The result is that the Chevy can now use all of Lingenfelter’s power when off-road.

Putting that power to the ground is done with 17-inch Method Race Wheels NV that have been fitted with 37-inch Falken Wild Peak M/T tires.

Making room for those 37s are Fiberwerx front fenders and nightstands. Each adds 5.5 inches of wheel clearance over stock, and the Fiberwerx Bumper Valance upgrade was also used. When the glass was on, a nice satin black finish was applied.

An ADD Dimple R rear bumper is used and has rigid D series lights mounted on it. Speaking of Rigid Industries, a 40-inch E-Series LED light bar extends across the top of the windshield to light the way.

The bed now features an in-vehicle storage system. In addition to the twin 48-inch drawers that hold a ton of stuff, one of the many good things about it is that it covers the entire bed area. It’s also sturdy enough to have 2000 pounds piled on top, so there’s a bit of a balance between storage and strength.

There are also many beautiful things inside. It’s bone stock, but the seats are well bolstered, but the interior is as well laid out as you could get in a 2014 Chevy truck. The comfort level is high, if not the off-road ability.

When the owner of this Reaper, one Tom Benavides, goes for a ride, he does so knowing that his Chevy has the power, suspension and capabilities to cut through anything the trail throws its way. When it was teased last week, it promised a lot but when it was introduced it delivered, well, not so much. Sure, the performance boost is impressive, but whenever you mention the word “reaper,” we expect something sinister.

To be fair, the work done by Southern Comfort Automotive and Lingenfelter should not be discounted. We just expected it to be a bit darker than it actually was presented. That said, the aero kit is pretty comprehensive, thanks to the Southern Comfort and Supercharged Reaper package.

The former is responsible for the Silverado’s refreshed styling. Yes, it looks quite different from the standard Silverado, something we can attribute to the front clip grille reshaping that makes the hood appear to extend a little further than usual into the trapezoidal grille. Note that it’s also different compared to the standard Silverado’s rectangular grille.

A new lighting system was also installed on the Silverado, which in this case is an integrated Rigid Industries Flood lighting system and LED daytime running lights. That’s a short way of saying the Reaper has more intimidating lights. Speaking of intimidating, the kit also includes a side step and rock guard, auxiliary switch panel, Reaper gauge pack, custom stitched headrest covers, custom Reaper graphics, and serialized Reaper badges.

Overall, the program is really intense, but somehow Southern Comfort Automotive forgot that black, maybe even matte black, is a much more imposing look on the Silverado than red.

As for Lingenfelter’s involvement, the tuning firm famous for its Corvette programs produced two sets of upgrades for the Reaper Silverado. The less powerful of the two goes to the 5.3-liter EcoTec 3 V-8 engine that now pumps out 475 horsepower, compared to the standard unit’s 355 ponies. The larger version of the two comes with the range-topping 6.2-liter EcoTec 3 V-8 engine. From the Silverado’s standard 420 horsepower output, Lingenfelter’s TVS1900 Magnuson Supercharger managed to bump the output up to an impressive 550 horsepower.

Finally, suspension work to improve the pickup’s overall robustness was done courtesy of Fox Racing while the nee exhaust comes by way of Corsa.

Overall, the mechanical and performance specifications of the Chevrolet Silverado Reaper are what we expected to see. And to be fair, the list of upgrades is what we’d like to see in the Silverado.

There’s just something about a red pill with the name “Reaper” on it that doesn’t excite us, compared to what it would look like in black clothing.

The next-generation Silverado was introduced just in time for the 2014 model year. It received major updates on the exterior, interior and under the hood, changes that transformed it into the “strongest, smartest and most capable Silverado ever.”

Chevrolet Silverado Reaper: Raptor Harvester

The 2014 Silverado is offered with a choice of three new EcoTec3 engines: a 4.3-liter V-6, a 5.3-liter V-8, and a 6.2-liter V-8 engine, with power levels ranging from 285 and 420 horsepower.

Kirby’s first exposure to the world of cars came when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year-old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t make much of an impression on him (that happened later in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that one day he will own a car with it
