Chevrolet Silverado Reaper By Southern Comfort Automotive And Lingenfelter

We wanted to get a little deeper into the origins of the Reaper project, and the collaboration between the renowned domestic performance tuning company Lingenfelter Performance Engineering and Southern Comfort Automotive, for this strategic collaboration of Yankee engineering know-how and Southern style . We spoke with Mike Copeland, vice president of Operations at LPE, about how the Reaper came to be, and what the plans are for the truck moving forward.

Copeland said the idea for a performance off-road oriented Silverado began in 2012, when the company learned of the impending introduction of the new K2XX-series trucks. The company initially planned to do all the styling and performance upgrades in-house. The original name for the concept was T-Rex, and it was envisioned as a rival to the Roush and Shelby-tuned version of the Ford Raptor. Lingenfelter took delivery of its first 2014 truck in May 2013, and immediately began development on engine performance packages. With a Magnacharger on the 5.3-liter EcoTec V-8, the truck ran an impressive 13.89 quarter miles at more than 100 mph, even with a high 3.08 axle ratio.

As Lingenfelter was making rapid progress on its T-Rex project, Ken Lingenfelter received a call from Michael McSweeney of Southern Comfort Automotive, based in Trussville, Alabama. Southern Comfort was working on their own customized Silverado, and called on Lingenfelter for performance upgrades for the truck. After a lengthy call between Lingenfelter and McSweeney, Copeland and Lingenfelter flew to Alabama to see what the company was up to. Impressed with the aggressive styling treatment that Southern Comfort did for the Silverado, the two companies decided to join forces on the truck that would become the Reaper.

While the Raptor is the most obvious rival to the Reaper at first glance, Copeland points out differences in approach. “The Raptor is a factory-built truck. [OEMs] have the opportunity to apply a lot of resources and spend a lot of money building something.” But Copeland doesn’t feel Lingenfelter or Southern Comfort are necessarily disadvantaged from a factory-built effort. “We don’t have the advantage of big budgets, or we have hundreds of trucks to use for development, but we can move quickly and make decisions quickly.”

Like the Raptor, the Reaper uses Fox racing shocks. Some of the more cynical observers might see that as a copycat move, but Copeland says the Fox dampers were chosen because “they’re the best in the business.” Other suspension components were developed by Ridetech, due to its experience in developing military-spec suspension systems. Fox, Ridetech and LPE collaborated on the development of the Reaper suspension.

Dealer response to the Reaper at the NADA show was strong, and Southern Comfort has already sold several units and signed up new dealers who have expressed interest in selling the Reaper. The package will be offered on all Silverado cab configurations, and non-factory parts will be covered by a three-year, 36,000-mile limited warranty. Prices are expected to start in the mid-$50,000 range with the final price dependent on the personalization options chosen by the customer. The King is by Brenthel, and therefore the Baja Kits, usually the shock of choice, so a pair of King Shocks, a 3.0 Coil-Over and a 3.0 Bypass, are used on each side, along with a King Air Bump to finish off nicely that big hit.

Baja Kits’ Rear Cantilever Shock System trick controls the Currie Enterprises floating rear. It uses a pair of King 3.0 triple Bypass shocks and King Air Bumps, along with a Deaver Springs leaf pack. The result is that the Chevy can now use all the Lingenfelter horsepower when off-road.

Putting that power to the ground is done with 17-inch Method Race Wheels NV’s fitted with 37-inch Falken Wild Peak M/T wheels.
