The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 does many things well. The latest generation of this half-ton truck drives better than many midsize pickups, offers some of the best powertrains in its class, and of course, its towing and towing numbers are excellent. But despite all these positives, it’s a hodgepodge of head-scratching choices and omissions of enthusiasm. In short, it’s a car that leaves me with more mixed feelings than the Game of Thrones finale.

Chevy Silverado 2500 Review: For Needs, Not Wants

My Silverado test unit was dressed in Custom Trail Boss trim and has a stretched cab body with a 6.5-foot bed. That cargo box is probably the most versatile in the business. Engineers moved the sidewalls to increase the amount of drag and dropped anchor hooks into the pile.

GM’s integrated protective steps and stock bed rails make it very easy to climb into this pickup’s raised bed and reliably eliminate drop-down or folding steps. Conveniently, the tailgate also lowers at the push of a button. You still have to close it manually on my tester, but there’s enough help that it’s fingertip-light.

As configured, this Silverado can handle a maximum payload of 1,618 pounds and the tow rating is up by 9,300 pounds. These aren’t class-leading figures, but they’re certainly good. GM’s towing information sticker is a stroke of genius on the driver’s side door jamb, giving you quick access to these important figures.

A whopping seven different powertrain combinations are offered in the 2020 Silverado, including several flavors of V8, four-cylinder and base V6. Depending on the engine, three different automatic transmissions are offered. Keeping things simple, my test car was equipped with a range-topping drivetrain, a 6.2-liter V8 mated to a 10-speed automatic.

This engine is absolutely beautiful, proof positive that magic happens when two banks of four cylinders share a common shaft. Not only does it run smooth and sound strong, but it makes a healthy sound when you give it a shout, it has 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Whether blasting from a standstill or weaving through slow-moving traffic, those figures are more than enough to make the Silverado feel downright quick, with acceleration courtesy of an equally smooth and responsive gearbox. This 10-speed transmission was originally built with the Ford, but in this particular GM application it seems smoother and more intelligent, dropping ratios quickly when more speed is needed in an undetectable manner.

Helping increase efficiency, that big ol’ V8 is fitted with both direct fuel injection and variable valve timing, but that’s not all. Additionally, it features a cool technology called Dynamic Fuel Management. Think of this as next generation cylinder deactivation. Instead of shutting down only four engine pots under light loads, this system has the ability to disable any number of cylinders with 17 different activation settings based on driving conditions. Thanks to clever engineering and lots of computer code, this setup is flawless. You won’t feel or hear it working with less than eight cylinders. It’s amazing how smooth it is and how effective it looks.

The EPA rates my car at 14 miles per gallon city and 18 highway. Plus it’s estimated to return 15 mpg, a rather scary score. However, in real-world, mixed driving, the computer readout says I was actually getting about 18.7 mpg, which is impressive gas mileage with a two-car garage about as much space up front. Undoubtedly, the engine’s soft-soft stop-start system helps in this area.

No one expects a full-size truck to drive like a BMW M3, but this is closer than you might expect. With your typical frame construction and live rear axle aided by parallel leaf springs, the Silverado is built like a car and still feels like one, but it’s unexpectedly supple and gentle.

My test car’s ride quality is firm, but never makes you feel bumpy or bruised. Handling is unexpectedly secure, with reasonably crisp steering feel and minimal body roll. By comparison, the F-150 looks less dialed in, and the Silverado feels much smaller than the comparable Ram 1500. This pickup is better for lighting than the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger midsize cars I’ve recently tested. It feels smaller than a Toyota and more cluttered than a Swallow Ford.

In addition to several black exterior components, Trail Boss models feature a 2-inch suspension lift and a Z71 off-road package. This includes skid plates to protect underbody hardware, a rear differential to improve off-road traction and Rancho monotube shock absorbers. It also has hill-descent control and 18-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wangler DuraTrac tires.

This Silverado’s interior is mostly quiet, though the tires on the wheels like to sing on the pavement. Tire noise is about the only racket to be heard in this truck, other than a slight whistling sound from the exhaust at high speeds.

This full-size Chevy is fun to drive and has an excellent powertrain, but these important advantages are offset by a few significant drawbacks. The current generation Silverado has been widely criticized for its lackluster interior, and that’s still the case here, especially when compared to the Ram 1500, which easily has the class’s best cabin.

My tester’s inner sanctum is very solid, with every surface made of hard plastic. The color combination is useless. It’s black on black with dashes of gray and splashes of charcoal, which make things look like a big layoff.

The Silverado’s interior isn’t great, but because expectations are low, I like this exact example better than higher-end models. It’s a little easier to have economy-grade plastics and a lack of features when you’re paying $45,000 for 60 grand or so instead.

Another downside of this Silverado is the lack of features. There’s no adaptive cruise control or blind spot monitoring. It is not equipped with reversing sensors, lane keeping assist or an integrated navigation system. Automatic high beams are nowhere to be found, along with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. But here’s the kicker. These features aren’t even available as an option on the Custom Trail Boss trim, which is nuts since Honda, for example, gives you all of these things in the Civic.

New Chevy Cars, Trucks, & Suvs

Fortunately, that situation is changing somewhat for the 2021 model year. Chevrolet is tweaking the Silverado’s trim and options lineup. Workcar, Custom and Custom Trailblazer models are available with a safety package that includes features such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert and steering wheel-mounted audio controls, among other features. Also, both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on higher-end models and some lower trims.

My test Silverado’s lack of content was caused by a number of plastic barriers. There’s more on the bottom of the center stack, along with a pair of dummy switches, and there’s another shiny filler piece on the right-hand steering wheel, a large, square needle-embossed die that’s impossible to ignore. It’s also hard to overlook the non-opening center console that limits interior storage space, the old-fashioned stick-and-screw ignition, or the needle-shaped steering wheel that practically screams rental car.

The Silverado’s long, wide dashboard is mostly flat, making the standard 7-inch infotainment screen even smaller. Higher-end models come with a slightly larger 8-inch display, but that’s still pretty narrow, especially compared to the 12-inchers you can find in Ram pickups these days. A bit of good news, Chevy’s infotainment system is easy to use and as responsive as anything you’ll find in a truck these days, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, though not a tuning knob. There are physical buttons to change stations or tracks.

At least my test car’s front seats are supportive, wrapped in nice fabric and undamaged for years of abuse. Like an oasis in the desert, the woven headliner is also unexpectedly premium.
