The n ame was used for the top models in Ford’s full-size range from 1958 to 1961 in a marketing effort to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. In 1958, a concept car named “la Galaxie” was introduced which incorporated the headlights into pods integrated with the grille and a reduced front profile.
For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with the “500” and “500/XL” distinguishing the top line. The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced in 1965 and was followed by the 7-liter Galaxie 500 for 1966. The Galaxie 500 prefix was dropped from the LTD in 1966 and from the XL in 1967.
However, the basic levels of row structure were retained. The “regular” Galaxie 500 continued under the LTD as Ford’s mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise on the 1974 model day.
The 1959 Ford range was introduced in late 1958 with the Fairlane 500 as the top trim level.

During the 1959 model year, the Galaxie was added to the range as an additional trim level, taking over the top spot from the Fairlane 500.
The Galaxie was offered in the same sedan and hardtop body style as the Fairlane 500, while the Sunliner and Skyliner convertibles moved across the Fairlane 500 lineup.
In keeping with the era, the 1959 Galaxie was a chrome and stainless steel vehicle with optional two-tone paint. It was the very epitome of imposing American cars in the late 1950s, albeit somewhat more subdued than its Chevrolet and Plymouth competitors. Ford advertised “safety anchoring” for the front seats.
Seat belts, a padded dashboard, and child-proof rear door locks were optional, while a deep-dish steering wheel and dual door locks were standard.

Among the models was the Skyliner, which moved up from the Fairlane 500 model and featured a retractable hardtop that folded into the trunk. This feature, complex and explosive, left very little space in the trunk folded. Power-folding hardtops have since been used by luxury manufacturers such as Mercedes-Bz, Lexus and Cadillac, but in all these cases the vehicle was a two-seater, allowing for a much smaller top mechanism than that of the Skyliner. It wasn’t until 2006, when the Pontiac G6 convertible, Peugeot 206 CC (in Europe) and Volkswag Eos appeared, that another mass-market rear-seat model appeared in this segment.
The 1960 Galaxie introduced an all-new design with less decoration. A new body style was the Starliner, which featured a huge, curved rear observation window in a pillarless, hardtop body. The slim, sloping rear roof pillar had three “star” emblems that served as the Galaxie’s signature badge for all 1960 – 62 models. The official 2-door hardtop was not available this year, but the roofline was used for the 2-door sedan with Galaxie pillars, with chrome window frames. It was the most popular body style in the lineup for 1959, and sales plummeted. Contrary to Ford’s tradition of round pie taillights, the 1960 featured downward-facing “crescent” moons. The “A” pillar now extended forward instead of backward, making it more appealing to climb in and out of the car.
For 1961, the body was restored again, although the underpinnings were the same as in 1960. This time, the tails were all but gone. small blade-like fins once again covered smaller versions of the round “pie-plate” taillights of 1959. Performance was beginning to be a selling point, and the 1961 Galaxie offered a new 390 CID (6.4 L ) of Ford’s FE series pushrod V8, which was available with either four-barrel carburetors or, for higher performance, three two-barrel carburetors. The latter was rated at 401 hp (298 kW) (gross). The 352 was downgraded in favor of the 390. it was equipped with a 2-barrel carburetor and single exhaust. The Starliner was offered again this year and Ford promoted this model with luxury and power equipment, but it was dropped on New Year’s Day as the reintroduced hardtop coupe, the Galaxie Club Victoria, took most of the sales.
For 1962, the Galaxie name was applied to all Ford full-size models, as the Fairlane name was transferred to a new intermediate model and the Custom was temporarily retired. New top-of-the-line Galaxie 500 models (two-door sedan and hardtop, four-door sedan and hardtop, and “Sunliner” convertible) that offered plush interiors, more exterior chrome trim, and a few extra luxury items beyond what was standard. the simplest Galaxie models. Base Galaxie models were available in two- and four-door sedans, as well as the plain Ranch Wagon. In an effort to boost mid-season sales, Ford introduced a group of sports cars along with a “Lively Ones” marketing campaign. These models featured the bucket seats and console made popular by the Chevrolet Corvair Monza and included a Fairlane 500 Sports Coupe and a Falcon Futura. The full-size lineup was available with new “Lively One” bucket seats and console, the Galaxie 500/XL (two-door hardtop and convertible). Ford stated in its sales literature that the XL stood for “Xtra Lively”.

The 223 cu in (3.7 l) 6-cylinder “Mileage Maker” was the base engine. The 292 cu in (4.8 l) V8 was standard on the 500/XL. The XL had sportier trim inside and out. This model was Ford’s answer to Chevrolet’s Super Sport option for the large Impala, which had been introduced the previous year and saw a significant increase in sales for 1962. A 406 cu in (7 L) genie was available in a single four-barrel or triple carburetor “six-barrel” form. The tail fins were gone, giving the 1962 models a more rounded, smoother look at the rear. The taillights were placed lower in the rear frame and partially sunk into the newly sculpted rear bumper. Externally, XL models received a thicker chrome spear on the side of the body, along with a new “Galaxie 500XL” badge on each rear fder (including the convertible, where this badging replaced the “Sunliner” script). An oval version of the Galaxie’s “star” emblem replaced the Ford crests on the roof canvas panels on hardtops. The shapes of the front fders were the same as in 1961. a slightly modified flat face grille featured a large “star” emblem at its tip for all Galaxie 500 and higher priced models.
The 1962 models were overweight compared to the Super Duty Pontiacs with their aluminum body panels and larger displacement genies.
Therefore, late in production, Ford’s Experimtal Garage was ordered to reduce the Galaxie’s weight.
It produced 11 “lightweight Galaxies”, using fiberglass panels, as well as aluminum bumpers, aprons and arms.
