The Duramax V8 engine is a family of 6.6 liter Diesel V8 engines manufactured by DMAX, a joint venture between Geral Motors and Isuzu in Moraine, Ohio. Duramax block and heads are supplied from trusted Geral Motors suppliers. This engine was first installed in Chevrolet and GMC vehicles in 2001, and since then has been the standard for pickups, vans, and midsize trucks. In 2006, production at Moraine was down to about 200,000 barrels per year.
The RPO LB7 (gine code “1”) was first introduced in 2001 and continued until early 2004. It is a 32-valve design with high-speed common-rail direct injection and an experimental cylinder head.
LLY (internally called 8GF1) (gine code “2”) is 6.6 L; 403.9 cu in (6, 619 cc) turbocharged engine that debuted in mid-2004 and continued until d of 2005. It is a 32-valve design with high-speed rail injection and aluminum cylinder heads. The LLY was GM’s first attempt to impose emissions requirements on their diesel vehicles. To achieve this goal, they turned to a newly designed Garrett turbocharger with a variable geometry vane system and installed an EGR Valve. Learning from problems with the injectors in the previous LB7, GM changed the valve covers to install the injectors without removing the valve covers, saving a lot of labor costs if replacement injectors are needed.

There are two VIN codes for LBZ. The first one is VIN 2 produced in late 2005 and early 2006. Vin 2 gine is mechanically and physically similar to VIN D gine but uses the LLY gine machine because of LBZ maintenance it takes a long time to be EPA certified and put into production.
The second is VIN D. This was introduced in 2006 and continued until 2007 sold only in the “classic” body style. This is a great computerized gine tune that produces more power and torque on a 2005 LLY gine model. First appearance of Duramax in Express/Savanna vehicles. LBZ is one of the most sought after Duramax engines due to its power, reliability, and emissions (DPF appeared on the next LMM series in 2007).
The LMM (gen code “6”) was introduced in 2007 and was produced in early 2011 and is compatible with a 6-speed Allison transmission. The LMM was the only Duramax offered for the 2007-2010 model years.
The 6.6L Duramax diesel engine (VIN code “L”) is used on the 2010 interim and 2011 Chevrolet Express and 2011 GMC Savana vans and 2011 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles with RPO ZW9 (chassis cabs or vehicles carrying box removal). The LGH engine was rated at 335 bhp (250 kW) at 3100 rpm and 685 lb⋅ft (929 N⋅m) at 1600 rpm. Like the LML this engine also uses DPF and DEF to meet emissions standards.

The 6.6L RPO LML (VIN code “8”) is a 2011-2016 Isuzu/GM Duramax V8 diesel engine. It is another high quality LMM generator with many modifications required to reduce power output. Other parts of the gin engine, such as the design of the piston oil to control heat and the design of the oil pump, were also modified to increase durability.
The LML engine was significantly modified in 2011 to provide better air quality that meets the new federal standards for diesel engines, giving the engine greater durability and also reducing noise. New 29, 000 PSI piezo injection, complete oil system-harding tolerance up to 20% biodiesel mixtures and urea injection (reducing nitrog oxides) and 5.3 gallon urea tank for processing fuel and air systems. This engine is equipped with fuel injection in the exhaust system, allowing the injection of crude oil during the filter recirculation routine. The RPO LML engine is rated at 397 hp (296 kW) at 3000 rpm and 765 lb⋅ft (1, 037 N⋅m) of torque at 1600 rpm.
The L5P duramax is the latest version of the Duramax V8 diesel engine. (gine code Y) Introduced in 2017, it is the most powerful diesel pickup truck GM has produced with 445 hp (332 kW) at 2,800 rpm and 910 lb⋅ft (1,234 N⋅m) at 1,600 rpm. The design can exceed 550 bhp (410 kW) at 3050 rpm and 1, 050 lb⋅ft (1, 424 N⋅m) at 1975 rpm.
The L5D Duramax is a lowered version of the L5P for the Chevy Silverado MD and International CV (Class 4, 5, 6). The L5D has been tuned to increase reliability and reduce downtime. The L5D was introduced in 2018 in the 2019 Chevy Silverado MD and International CV vehicles. Specifications for the L5D are 350 hp (261 kW) at 2600 RPM and 700 lb⋅ft (949 N⋅m) at 1600 RPM.2003 Chevy Silverado Available With Six-Speed Stick Transmission050lcabro2 Steve Six-Speed Stick Transmission050lcabro2 HD is with a unique manual transmission and 600HP Duramax
Duramax Buyer’s Guide: How To Pick The Best Gm Diesel
When Steve Berglund bought his Arrival Blue 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, he was still dealing with the terrible frustration of his beloved custom 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD breaking down. At first he wanted to just drive and enjoy the new Silverado without making any changes other than the ECM change, but thoughts started to flow and he saw the new car as an opportunity for a fresh start.
The Silverado was one of the cleanest cars Steve found during his research, making it a great starting point for everyday driving. He started the job by removing the steering gear and installing Cognito Motorsports 4- to 6-inch non-torsion bar components complete with Fox Factory Performance Series 2.0 shocks at all four corners. The car rolls on 33X12.50R20 Nitto Ridge Grappler tires wrapped around polished aluminum 20×12 American Force Rebel wheels.
They also started doing color matching on the outside of the car to make the brand stand out more. Then the earthquake struck a second time when Steve’s girlfriend at the time called to tell him that she had been run over by a car with her car. He felt like he was Bill Murray living the same day over and over again in his “Groundhog Day” drive.
However, this time, the damage was not serious so he went back to work and decided to restore the car by installing a 2005 grille, hood, lights and fenders to replace the damage and improve the appearance at the same time. After deciding to go beyond simple tuning and running a part, Steve turned to Jason Wehrli and his team at Wehrli Custom Fabrication to not only dress up the engine bay but also provide some extra oomph under the hood. Steve and Jason settled on a WCFab BorgWarner S366SX-E turbocharger upgrade, with additional tubes and a powder-coated turbo pedestal.
