So, while buying a last-minute flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Orlando (MCO) in late April, the paraglider planned to see the annual paragliding competition in Groveland, Florida, with friends who also fly. the trip was nothing unusual. What was unusual, however, were the rental car prices when Salamone went to check prices online for his three-night trip.

He immediately called a friend with a knack for handling travel snafus for advice, but they came up short. However, a solution came to him when he went for a walk.

Salamone told TPG that he found a delivery van at a U-Haul pickup location near the Orlando airport for $19.95 a day, plus an additional $10 mileage fee during his trip.
The entire rental cost him $100 and saved him a lot because he could forgo the hotel and sleep in the van thanks to friends in Florida. According to Salamone, they even bought him a magnetic screen from ACE Hardware to keep out the mosquitoes.
Salamone’s delayed flight landed at the Orlando airport late in the evening, so no one was working at the U-Haul office when he arrived. Also, the U-Haul app doesn’t work for him to pick up the van.
But even though he couldn’t get into the U-Haul until the next day, Salamone told TPG he still considered the experience a success.
With Car Rentals Impossible To Find, Some Are Resorting To U Hauls
“It was clean and very comfortable,” he said of the van. “For less than $100, I had a hotel and a car for my trip.”
With many domestic and even international destinations on the rise, dwindling rental car inventory and rising prices are making finding a rental car difficult and expensive right now. Travelers everywhere have called the current situation carmageddon (among other … more creative terms).
A search on Orbits for car rentals in Tampa and Key West, Florida in late April showed prices around $500 per week for the months of May. Car rentals in Honolulu were over $1,000 per week for the same dates. CNN recently reported that the cost of renting a car in Maui was $722 per day.
While not all areas of the country are struggling (for example, car rentals in Aspen, Colorado were around $250 per week on Orbits for the same week in early May), travelers should be aware that car rentals are now available. can come with sticker shock – if you own a vehicle at all.

Andrew Locke of the Travel Pro Show said he also rented a U-Haul when he saw a spike in Las Vegas car rentals for his trip from London in mid-April. Locke, who rents a car about once a month during his travels and usually books directly through Hertz, told TPG that he is very knowledgeable about Las Vegas rental car prices.
“It’s usually $40 a day, but I’ve also seen prices around $150 a day on sites like AutoSlash and Costco,” he said, referring to aggregator sites known for their good rates.
Faced with such a high price, he turned to U-Haul in the hope that it would be cheaper. Locke calculated how many miles he would need to drive around Las Vegas during his five-day business trip (about 100 miles) and also took out $40 worth of U-Haul insurance. He told TPG it was a no-brainer to rent a U-Haul over a traditional rental car.
“What I would have spent on a day’s rental, I got a U-Haul the whole time.”

He chose a cargo van from U-Haul, one of the smallest rental options. According to Locke, the U-Haul van was comparable to driving a large SUV, including parking. But Lock cautioned other travelers to confirm what you’re getting with U-Haul when you book so you don’t risk moving on to something bigger if there’s no inventory.
Turo, a car service often referred to as “Airbnb rental cars,” is another alternative to traditional car rental companies that have recently become popular due to the problems with car rentals.
With inventory in every US market, as well as Canada and the UK, the Turo app acts as an online marketplace where car owners can rent out their private cars to people in need. The prices are generally cheaper than what you’d find through a rental car company—a recent search showed $23 a day for a Fiat in Los Angeles and $30 a day for a Prius in Maui, Hawaii.
Turo is also prone to inventory shortages, but this happened to Cindy Rich of Orem, Utah, during a trip to Orlando in April.

She and her husband changed their flights at the last minute to arrive the day before. They went to Thrifty to make a car reservation they had made a few weeks ago, but it wasn’t available. They turned to Turo as a backup plan, but Rich said there were no cars available via the app.
“My husband had the idea to rent a Home Depot truck,” Rich said, adding that he had done it on a previous trip to Colorado. The couple drove to the nearest Home Depot and picked up the last rental truck in stock, a Ford 250 flatbed truck, for $130 a day.
“I can’t imagine what we would have done if my little girl had been with us. Home Depot trucks are not car seat compatible.”

Amid Soaring Gas Prices, Diy Movers Turn To U Haul For Cost Savings
If you are planning an upcoming trip that requires a rental car and find that the prices are too high for your budget, here are some tips and tricks to help you find an alternative:
1. Home improvement companies like Home Depot and Lowes often rent pickup trucks, which can be a cheaper option than rental cars in some markets. But keep in mind that if you’re traveling with small children who need car seats, these trucks may not be suitable for a family.
2. If you see higher rates for specific rental dates, try extending your booking window to a longer trip to see if that lowers the daily rate, Lock said. Often, car rental companies will let you return the car earlier than your reservation without penalty – and in some cases, they can refund the days that were not rented.
3. Also check car rental prices closer to your trip, as they may drop closer to your actual travel dates.

4. For trips between Florida and Washington, D.C., see Amtrak bus tickets to see if it’s best to bring your own car with you. Daily service runs nearly 900 miles (17.5 hours) along the East Coast between the Washington, DC and Orlando areas.
5. Check out car dealers like Nissan and Toyota that offer weekend “try before you buy” or car rental deals. This is another option that can be cheaper than traditional rental companies.
6. Finally, check aggregators like Costco and AutoSlash for deals. Be sure to click on your AAA and AARP memberships as well.
