This is an old topic, you may not get an answer and resurrect an old topic. Please consider creating a new topic. Hot rods come in all shapes and forms, from old fenderless roadsters to pretty much any four wheeler you decide to hop on these days. For Jason Bowman, his obsession with hot rods takes the form of Chevrolet pickups. Builds cars for others in his Big10Garage store. Bowman’s own garage has a single turbo, a six-speed C10 and this 77 Cummins twin C30.
As a child, it was Jason’s father who sparked his addiction to gears, as well as his passion for the C10. “My dad was always a ’72 Cheyenne,” Jason says. “I’ve always loved the boxy fronts of the ’69-’72 models, but the more I look at them the more I love the ’69-’91 models and everything in between. I’m just a Chevy guy.”
Looking for Chevy parts for another build, Jason landed at Christian Zitler’s parts depot. There he found this long abandoned ’77 C30 that stole his heart. “There was no name, it was filled with wasps, there was no information,” he says. “I fell in love with the color combination, this rusty metallic is such a weird shade that they just don’t do anything with it these days. I should have had it.”
After returning home and putting one of his trucks up for sale, Bowman soon searched Craigslist for a suitable power plant and brought home a C30. While Chevrolet may be its platform of choice when it comes to engines, diesel is its forte. Finding a 1997 Cummins 12-valve 5.9-liter 6BT that fit the bill for this build, he had no choice but to transport it in his C10 short bed turbo truck. With an extra 1,800 pounds since the engine was still on the Dodge subframe, and with bags filled to capacity, Jason and his turbo truck doggedly made the 20 miles to their shop about 2 inches off the ground.

While you’re shaking your head, we’ve all been there, demanding things from our hot rods that they were never meant to be. After all, part of why we love customizing cars is that no one should like it but us. For Jason and his C-series pickups, his opinion is paramount. “My daily 4WD but I like to keep my hot rods low. This is something I always come back to,” he explains.
Returning the engine to his workshop, Jason only had four months to build this C30 project, in addition to “regular” workshop work, before he planned to drive it from Phoenix, Arizona to Austin, Texas to compete. in Lone Star Throwdown. Breaking into the 6BT, Jason’s first sight was a JB-welded killer dowel pin lock, a common hotspot for 12-valve engines. Having properly corrected the problem, Jason proceeded to further beef up the transmission with 60 lb valve springs, 4000 RPM governor springs, an AFC housing, fuel plate modifications, and a Fass lift pump.
Power is delivered to the wheels by a rugged NV4500 transmission with a South Bend clutch. Jason decided to fix a known issue with the 4500’s 5th gear by welding the pinion itself to the face of the nut that is so often peeled off. Free modification, it has held up well for the 20,000 miles he has driven on this setup. Powered by a HE351 turbo engine, this powerful C30 develops a conservative but fun 300 bhp. and 750 lb-ft of torque.
Since its original two-tone combination of reddish brown metallic and beige is what Jason first fell in love with, the C30’s looks were an easy part of the build. However, to get this lowered rack, some work had to be done. Switch Suspension provided front 2.5″ spindles, a rear flip kit, and a c-notch. Riding on Bilstein shocks all around, both the front and rear mounts have received some modifications. The stock BBC front coils had one coil cut off, while the rears remained on the original leaf springs.

While custom touches adorn this truck at many points, one of the most notable is the custom 22-inch wheels made by Arclight Fabrication. It’s not often that a person has the opportunity to make their own custom wheels, but the situation Jason found himself in at Arclight was a bit impressive.
After meeting Aaron Kaufman during the C10 run at Lone Star Throwdown in 2016, the two hit it off and stayed in touch. Care
After moving to Texas and joining Aaron’s team, no two days were the same. One week they were building the Semi to race at Pikes Peak Speedway, and the next they were building the Scout into a 4400 unlimited mileage car for the King of the Hammers. “It was a lot of work and a hell of a lot of hours,” Jason recalls, “but I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.”
Of all the other things they built during filming, Jason’s wheels turned out to be one of the experiments they did in their spare time. With a shop full of tools and a terrific Haas milling machine, when the team’s lead designer, Joel, began looking at the C30 and taking measurements, it wasn’t long before a few designs were drawn and a sample wheel was made. cut. “Usually a wheel this size needs to be rotated when it is cut, but because Aaron’s machine was bigger, we were able to make the whole wheel in just one go.” Sure, the finished product can be tricky to clean, but it matches the look of the truck exactly.

One of the downsides of fitting a 22″ wheel on a two wheeler that tows regularly is finding a low profile tire with the right load capacity. With the recently released Nitto NT420V, Jason has finally found a tire that fits the bill. “You can just say that the design and construction of a tire is world-class beyond anything that is available,” he explains. “With 55 psi of pressure in them, the NT420V moves straight up and down and can carry the load of a truck. Also, I like the tread pattern.”
While Jason’s next build plan may go far into the realm of Time Attack racing, the beloved C30 allows him to simultaneously load up the family, hitch what he’s towing, and hit the road. “There is nothing better than a boxy body with big wheels rushing down the road,” says Jason. “The head turn and thumbs up are good too. I love seeing other people enjoy what I have created.”

These trucks represent a generation after the hugely popular square body series that ended in 1987. Debuting in early 1987 as a 1988 model year, this next generation of trucks had a completely new look with rounded lines that are slightly larger. efficiency, fuel-injected engines with overdrive and a much more spacious interior. But what exactly does OBS stand for, you ask? Ironically, this stands for Old Body Style (or, for some, Original Body Style). It doesn’t make sense to most people over 40, but the name stuck. The OBS name begins with GM’s internal code, GMT400, assigned to an all-new model truck that was replaced by the GMT800 in 1999. Thus, today it is the nickname “Old body style”.
A great example is Justin Wallace’s 1998 Chevy truck.
