After returning home and putting one of his trucks up for sale, Bowman soon searched Craigslist for a suitable power plant and brought home a C30. While Chevrolet may be its platform of choice when it comes to engines, diesel is its forte. Finding a 1997 Cummins 12-valve 5.9-liter 6BT that fit the bill for this build, he had no choice but to transport it in his C10 short bed turbo truck. With an extra 1,800 pounds since the engine was still on the Dodge subframe, and with bags filled to capacity, Jason and his turbo truck doggedly made the 20 miles to their shop about 2 inches off the ground.

Returning the engine to his workshop, Jason only had four months to build this C30 project, in addition to “regular” workshop work, before he planned to drive it from Phoenix, Arizona to Austin, Texas to compete. in Lone Star Throwdown. Power is delivered to the wheels by a rugged NV4500 transmission with a South Bend clutch. Jason decided to fix a known issue with the 4500’s 5th gear by welding the pinion itself to the face of the nut that is so often peeled off. Free modification, it has held up well for the 20,000 miles he has driven on this setup. Powered by a HE351 turbo engine, this powerful C30 develops a conservative but fun 300 bhp. and 750 lb-ft of torque.

Since its original two-tone combination of reddish brown metallic and beige is what Jason first fell in love with, the C30’s looks were an easy part of the build. However, to get this lowered rack, some work had to be done. Switch Suspension provided front 2.5″ spindles, a rear flip kit, and a c-notch. Riding on Bilstein shocks all around, both the front and rear mounts have received some modifications. The stock BBC front coils had one coil cut off, while the rears remained on the original leaf springs.

While Jason’s next build plan may go far into the realm of Time Attack racing, the beloved C30 allows him to simultaneously load up the family, hitch what he’s towing, and hit the road. “There is nothing better than a boxy body with big wheels rushing down the road,” says Jason. “The head turn and thumbs up are good too.
