It’s doubtful that many construction contractors would want to associate their name and brand with an ex-rappin’ redneck rockstar, but that didn’t stop Chevrolet from sending Kid Rock to help design a custom car.
Lifted Silverado 3500 Dually
As it turns out, the Kid, or Rock, or whatever he’s called, did a pretty good job. It’s one of the best-looking trucks on the floor of Sema this year—subtle and patriotic in a sea of over-the-top gainers.
Chevy Let Kid Rock Design A Silverado 3500 Dually… And It’s Actually Kind Of Cool? (photos)
The base model of the Kid Rock Custom is the 2016 Silverado 3500 HD Dual. Powered by a 6.8 liter, V8 Duramax Turbo diesel engine with an Allison transmission.
In a video Chevy showed after the truck was unveiled, Kid Rock from Detroit said the truck was “cool but still out of reach for the American worker.” The back of the seat bears a “Made in Detroit” logo featuring an image of the employee.
A custom black paint treatment sets this truck apart, along with black and white American flag graphics on the doors and bed. As I say, veteran without being upfront about it. The interior is covered in gray leather with “metal-like inserts embossed in acid wash denim.” (who knows?)
Oversized custom exhaust stacks shoot from the truck bed. Aggressive, all-terrain tires sit on 22-inch wheels. Mods and bling are held in high regard.

The tailgate handle has been moved to the interior to clean up the rear aspect. Oversized bow tie badges adorn the front and back. And designers threw in a few chrome touches in places like the front bumper recovery hooks, exhaust pipes and custom side steps under the bed quarter panel.
And to celebrate Kid Rock’s restraint in this design, here’s his latest video of a much younger Kid Rock driving around in a Chevy truck.
This year’s three finalists were recognized for excellence in meeting customer needs, employing technology and meeting today’s contractor service landscape and service requirements.
The Contractor of the Year competition recognizes contractors with annual revenues between $3 million and $15 million and exemplifies top construction professionals.

If you’re looking for a reliable pickup truck that can handle some of the most grueling challenges life throws at you, the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD could be the vehicle for you. It’s a hard worker that won’t let you down, with stunning good looks, a spacious and comfortable interior, and a decent amount of info to keep you going through your workday. It comes standard with a 360-horsepower V8, but what’s really impressive is the turbodiesel V8 with 910 pound-feet of torque. And, while it may not be quite as capable as the Ford F-350 or Ram 3500, each of which pulls a fairer deal, the Chevy can still hold its own. So if you’re looking for a reliable, tough everyday work car, consider the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD.
The previous Regular and Double Cab body styles are gone from the 3500HD lineup, leaving the Crew Cab as the sole body option. In all respects, the truck remains unchanged.
The Chevy Silverado certainly looks capable of hauling heavy loads, with a wide, strong chassis, a chunky front fascia with a wide grille, and a hood. Bi-level headlamps sit on the edge of the fascia and optional fog lamps sit near the lower fender floor. The truck rides on 18-inch wheels or 17-inch dual rear-wheel axle models. Large towing mirrors mounted on the side of the truck help deal with large blind spots.
Heavy-duty pickups are traditionally bulky vehicles, and the Silverado bucks the trend. Dimensions vary by bed length — 6.6 feet or 8.2 feet — and single rear wheel or dual rear wheel axle. The pickup stands between 239.5 and 258.4 inches long, with a wheelbase of 153.7 or 167.7 inches. Without mirrors, the truck is 80.5 to 95.9 inches wide and the height varies between 77.9 and 78.8 inches. Following the same vein, weight loss can be as low as 6,423 pounds and as high as 8,070 pounds. A ground clearance of 8.3 inches means the car can handle off-road prowess.

Every Silverado comes standard with a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 gasoline engine that sends 360 hp and 380 lb-ft to the rear wheels or all four and is connected to a six-speed automatic gearbox. That’s a fair amount of power, but it’s not enough to propel a heavy truck at high speeds, especially when loaded. Driving around town or merging onto highways won’t give you much trouble, but it won’t inspire confidence.
For real power, you can choose the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8. Mated to a more refined Allison six-speed automatic transmission, this powerplant produces 445 hp and 910 lb-ft. As a standard engine, both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. With this incredible torque, the lift can accelerate effortlessly even when fully loaded. It can complete the 0 to 60 mph run in under eight seconds, though this athleticism is a bit underwhelming in congested city traffic.
The standard powerplant can typically tow 14,100 pounds, and up to 14,200 pounds with a gooseneck. The Turbodiesel engine is able to tow 20,000 pounds in normal mode, which is a maximum of 23,100 pounds with the fifth wheel equipped. Although that’s no slouch, it’s £10,000 less than the class leaders.
While by no means athletic or flashy, the Silverado handles itself respectably on the road. As long as you don’t drive like a hooligan, the heavy-duty pickup’s handlebars will roll quite a bit. But just because it’s well-behaved doesn’t mean the truck likes to play with others. Heavy city traffic and crowded parking lots make the pickup look bigger than it is, and maneuvering around the lazy steering is a chore. While feedback is good at all speeds, the wheels aren’t very talkative and can rip your arm off if you suddenly want to make a sharp turn.

The brakes don’t help inspire confidence here either, offering less resistance than you’d expect from such a stout vehicle. They are suitable for around-town purposes, but emergency stops are less advised than usual, with a stopping distance of 130 feet from 60 mph.
Ride comfort could be better, but it’s surprisingly stiff for a heavy-duty truck. However, rivals like the Ford F-350 are more comfortable without the need for heavy loads to keep them from falling over bumps. This comfort is not helped much by the conventional seats, although the leather-appointed seats on the upper part of the seats improve the comfort. Wind noise can be obnoxious when blowing past large windshields, but road noise is greatly reduced.
Overall, the Chevy Silverado doesn’t have much to commend it as a daily driver, but in the heavy-duty segment, such things are rare. It handles well for a vehicle designed to pull heavy loads without complaint.
While the Silverado isn’t EPA-tested for fuel economy, real-world testing shows it gets 13 mpg overall when equipped with the standard gasoline engine. This makes it slightly more fuel efficient than class rivals like the Ford F-350 Super Duty. Switching to the more powerful turbodiesel engine improves this figure to 15 mpg, compared to 14 mpg for the Ford turbodiesel. With 38 gallons of fuel in reserve, the Chevy truck can cover up to 570 miles between pit stops when equipped with a diesel engine.

The interior of the cabin isn’t luxurious, but it’s solid and inspires confidence in the truck’s handling and durability. The seats are wrapped in vinyl as standard, with leather-appointed seats in the upper class. Each row of seats can accommodate up to three passengers, although both rows have a fold-down center seat that doubles as an armrest or storage space, limiting practical space. Although all six seats are filled, there is no shortage of space; Both head- and legroom are generous in the room, even for large adults. The driver’s seat is manually adjustable as standard, but the available 10-way power front seats are definitely recommended if you want a comfortable driving position in this blind spot.
Aside from its impressive towing capacity, the pickup has more than enough cargo capacity in its bed. With a standard 6.6-foot bed, there’s a maximum capacity of 61 cubic feet. A longer 8.2 feet increases this to 76.3 cubic feet in both single and dual rear-wheel axle configurations. Or
