When we started looking for the perfect car for our family of 9 we tried to determine what features the “perfect car” would have. It should be convenient for all of us. If possible it should fit in the garage. It should be something we don’t have in mind for ten years. It needs to be reasonably priced, almost indestructible. One way or another we feel like we’ve managed to get it all.

Right off the bat we listed the Express, Savana, and E-Series Vans. If you’ve ever taken the Super Shuttle to the airport you’ve ridden one of these. Most of them haven’t really been redesigned in a decade or more. Save for a few small faces, they remain dull and slow, running on global-warming V8s with frame-based construction.
The Nissan NV was an interesting choice as we found them to be popular large family buses. They come in a standard with 12 seats, the back 10 are divided into 7 different units so you have more flexibility. Our biggest issues with the Nissan were its size and handling. It was the largest of the cars we looked at – about 2 inches too long for our garage, and almost 2 feet longer than similar cars. In terms of handling, it handles much like a U-Haul box truck. It’s not good.
We had the hardest time deciding between the Ford Transit and one of GM’s larger SUVs. If you are a parent and have ever had the experience of trying desperately to find something that fits your family but not a minivan you will understand our plight. We went through that struggle a few years ago and decided that a larger exchange was better for us. We talked about how it has more power, better handling, better handling, and more. In the end we were wise enough not to buy a small car.
In retrospect, we made the wrong choice. When you have kids, you don’t want to worry about people crawling on the seats, or fitting the mirror into the slide/fold/stow mode. I won’t spend much time on this. But I will say that when it comes to ordering a car I think we have found the secret to success.
Before that, it is important to explain that we are not able to find a 10-passenger Transit Wagon that fits us in any seller anywhere in a day. I think that the combination of these are beautiful new cars, that they are mostly used as commercial vehicles, and that we don’t want a medium or high roof style is why we were forced to order one directly from Ford.
We built our custom model from the Ford website and then sent it (by email) to every Ford dealership within 75 miles. This was about 30 companies. We have notified that we have emailed other sellers and are hoping to get a better price. We heard back from about 12 of them. From our point of view, since it was the price of new cars that was the most important factor. We found the lowest price from a dealer in central Austin and placed the order with a $500 deposit. From there it was just a waiting game. We placed our order at the end of November 2015 and delivered it (to our home) in early March 2016. 16 weeks all told, without ever setting foot on the company we bought the car from.

The Transit comes in a wide range of configurations for the wagon model, which is the passenger version of the car. For the rest of the article I will ignore the business models. There are three roof lengths, two wheelbases and three body lengths. These offer anywhere from 8-15 passenger seats.
Our car, which is a low roof model does not need to be projected automatically. It is suitable for most areas.

If you’ve been driving a full-size truck, this doesn’t make it any harder to maneuver through narrow residential streets, or through the parking lot of your local Costco.

We drove a long-distance model on a trip just before we got our car. Yes, it was still very drivable, but I felt like I spent a lot of time checking my side mirror to make sure I wasn’t going to run around every time I made a right hand turn. If you don’t need more than 12 passenger seats, or storage space, I prefer a short wheelbase.
We chose the towing kit mostly because it was about the price of an aftermarket solution and we wanted to be able to tow a small trailer or mount a bike mounted rack.
The SYNC3 stereo “beautiful sound” may have been a bit of a techie. I reasoned with myself because it gets compatibility with Apple’s CarPlay technology later in the year through an update and I really want the ability to get full iPhone / Siri functionality through the audio system and the van’s display. One thing I didn’t consider, but am very happy with is how good the backup camera is. If you go with the small screen by skipping the SYNC system the view is really, really small. Ford could improve the resolution of that camera though. The internal screen has a beautiful 8-inch display, but the resolution of the rear camera looks very good as a phone camera.
I would suggest everyone get a secret mirror. We took a test drive of a Transit with “normal color” as one dealer called it. As far as we could tell the windows were 100% transparent. The mysterious mirror is not very dark, it looks very beautiful like the normal color.

You are very much in the driver’s seat. This has the great advantage of giving you an amazing visual site. It seems like you can see everything in front of you, the windshield is big and clear. The A-pillars are not very wide and from my perspective they don’t seem to block anything important.
A small print on the driver and passenger windows is that only about 55% of the window will roll down. I’m guessing that due to the awkward shape of the door not all of the window can fit into the panel so you have the back part rolling out but the front is stationary. It reminds you that you are in something that was originally designed as a commercial vehicle.
In my opinion the single biggest flaw of Train is its central rear view. The rear doors are barn-door style so there is a very wide column that runs down the center of the scene.
I gave up on using the rear-view mirror all together. I rely almost entirely on my driving side mirrors. This can be an argument for buying long handle glasses which are generally considered necessary if you do a lot of pulling. I have since bought the car a curved mirror that covers the rear view. This doesn’t help the rear view, but now I can keep an eye on all the passengers. Parents know what I’m talking about.
