U Haul Cargo Van Dimensions – Moving with a van is a great option for your move that many people might overlook. Not everyone lives in huge 6+ bedroom mansions. Most of us have a little less moving to deal with, and for those people, a truck can be the perfect solution to many of your moving day problems.
You may be lucky enough to live somewhere with plenty of parking, or you have a large driveway or loading area to use. For many, especially city dwellers, this is not the case. If you can only load from one allocated parking space, or need to park parallel to the street, moving by truck can be a wise decision. Trucks can be parked in most average parking spaces, and their shorter length makes them easier to park on the street. When parallel parked, the side loading doors make it easy to load and unload your household goods.

Can you only access your apartment through a parking garage? Are there overhangs or low hanging trees between your house and the road? Moving with a truck allows you to get to many of these places where taller trucks might not be able to go. The worst thing to deal with is a stuck or damaged truck on your moving day, just because you thought “Looks like the truck will fit.” Check the inside of the vehicle for clearance and always look for height restriction signs to be sure, but trucks are the best bet.
What Pickup Truck Does U Haul Use?
We know money can be tight and moving can come with many unexpected extra costs. At U-Haul, trucks are still priced from $19.95 and can be much lower per mile than the larger trucks. If you’re moving on a budget, this makes a van a great money-saving option. Check out these posts for more information on budgeting for your move.
You might be surprised how much you can actually fit in a truck. Sofas? Sofas up to 9′ long fit in the back of a truck. A bed? Full size mattresses fit easily. There is room for all this and more. The dimensions for the rear doors on U-Haul trucks are approximately 5’1-1/2″ x 4’1-1/2″ (WxH), and you have 9’6″ x 5’7″ x 4′ 7 ″ (LxWxH) in the cargo area, a total of 245 cubic feet of space for your household goods. (Note: U-Haul has several different models of vans in their fleet, you should check with your local dealer for details). Check out this U-Haul video showing everything that can fit in the back of a home moving truck: If you’re looking to rent a truck for an upcoming move, you’ve probably already considered U-Haul. But U-Transfer is far from your only option, and some competitors may actually be a better fit for you.
None of these are air traffic organizations, and you’ve probably heard of some, if not all, of them. So let’s dive in with the best and worst features, as well as pros and cons, of each of these U-Haul competitors.
What we love: It’s all in the name. Budget is dedicated to being the cheapest truck rental company out there, offering low base rates and a discount program that offers more savings for AARP members, military members, students, car club members and more.

What we don’t love: The savings are only for the basics. If you choose to purchase any add-ons for your move, such as moving supplies, insurance or help with loading/unloading, they will cost more with Budget than with its competitors.
What we love: There’s a lot to love about Penske, but what sets it apart from other companies is the work it’s doing to become a more sustainable business. Driving a moving truck isn’t easy on the environment, but Penske offers low-emission trucks, fuel-efficient diesels, and top-speed trucks to make them a little better for the world.
What We Don’t Love: Penske doesn’t have many faults, but if we had to pick one, it’s that they’re only available in 48 states, so their coverage just isn’t as good as U-Haul’s.
What we love: Enterprise offers a wide variety of trucks, from pickup trucks to cargo trucks to 26-foot box trucks. There are 14 truck sizes to choose from, more than any other trucking company in this industry.
Ford E Series
What We Don’t Love: Except in rare cases, Enterprise trucks have to be returned to the same location you picked them up from. That means that for long-term moves, Enterprise probably won’t work for you. But for local exercise, it’s still a great option.
What we love: U-Haul is the most well-known of all these companies because they’ve been in business the longest and have spread to cover almost everywhere. Think about it: When was the last time you drove down the highway and didn’t see an orange and white U-Haul truck? U-Haul has locations in all 50 states, and often multiple locations in the same area, giving you countless conveniences and a high probability of getting the U-Haul truck you want, even if the nearest location is sold out—go just go to the place across town and check there.
What We Don’t Love: U-Haul has a reputation for being less than transparent with pricing. User reviews criticize the company for wrangling hidden fees, so its well-advertised base price of $19.99-$24.99 is almost never what the truck actually costs.

How Far Will U Haul’s Base Rate Really Get You?
When you book your move with a DIY company like one of these, you’ll get the most bang for your buck if you do most of the work yourself. That means each of these companies will hand you the keys to your chosen rental car, and then it’s up to you to pack, load, drive, unload, pick up and return the car yourself.
However, they offer several extensions and customizations. Here’s what you can expect from each of these U-Haul competitors.
We need to keep in mind that although these are generally the services that are available, things may vary from location to location. Online reviews specifically complain that U-Haul has inconsistent service depending on which location you use. Before relying on any service, you should check with your branch of each rental company to make sure it is among what they offer.
Here’s some good news: All of these companies have great coverage in North America. Here is where you can find branches for U-Haul and its competitors.

However, while there are locations in all of these locations, what can never be guaranteed is what kind of vehicle inventory each location will have. No matter which company you choose and where you live, you need to do some local research and contact nearby locations to see what types of trucks and trailers are available to you.

While Enterprise has the widest selection of trucks available, Penske tends to have the newest fleet (the average age of its trucks is only two years!). But each of these companies offers a variety of trucks to choose from, each with different capabilities. Here’s what they have to offer.
U-Haul offers a fairly standard 7 truck sizes. Its fleet sees high user turnover, which means attrition can be a problem. Make sure to inspect a U-Haul truck carefully and take it around the block to test it for problems before you leave.

U-Haul is also the only company on this list that offers trailers for rent. Here are the types of trailers that are available.
The great thing about Penske’s fleet is that its biggest trucks are equipped with diesel engines, which makes them more fuel efficient. Penske also frequently replaces its trucks with new ones, meaning the average age of the fleet is only two years. Overall, users find these trucks to be new, reliable, and in great shape.
Budget only offers 3 truck sizes, the fewest on this list. Their reliability seems to be pretty average – there are customer reviews that complain about minor issues, but not too many. It might be worth shelling out a few extra bucks for their road insurance, which isn’t included.
Enterprise has the largest selection of trucks available – more than we’ve seen from any other company in the industry. To save space, we’ll list everything Enterprise offers, but only include specs for some of the more popular truck models.
